About

It all started when Mark dropped by the mathematics department at the University of Technology Sydney wanting to chat about the geometry behind fashion design. Mary had an open door and this started a conversation about the philosophy of mathematics education. We both realised there were too many disciplinary silos in the world and we needed more interdisciplinary collaboration.

Mary with 30 years of mathematics teaching experience had never spoken to a fashion designer and was astonished that Mark was such a competent user of mathematical formulas. Mark was incredibly nervous that his formulas were correct...

We started to exchange books, websites and pop cultural references that made math fun and accessible. It wasn't long before we had identified the potential to teach STEAM concepts through hands on fashion and textile workshops. This has the potential to teach advanced mathematical concepts including calculus and geometry. We both share a belief that learning could be a deeper experience involving curiosity, asking the big questions, problem solving and creativity.

This is just the beginning and we are fostering relationships at UTS and beyond with like minded people. As we develop more Fashion STEAM workshops watch this space...
